The most common thing we hear on a first call is some version of: we were told to wait until junior year. It is well-meaning advice, usually from a club coach or another parent, and it is wrong for almost every player.
What is actually happening in sophomore year
College coaches are not allowed to contact most recruits directly until June 15 after sophomore year. Families hear that and assume nothing happens before then. The opposite is true. Staffs are building their target lists throughout sophomore year. They are watching film, talking to club coaches, and deciding who they will call on June 15. If your player is not on that list, the phone does not ring.
Where the money goes
Scholarship budgets are committed early. A Division II staff with four scholarships to hand out for a recruiting class typically has verbal commitments for most of them before the players are seniors. Division I is earlier still. The families who start in junior year are competing for what is left, and what is left is rarely the best fit.
What starting early actually means
It does not mean pressure. It means an honest evaluation of level and timeline, a realistic list of target programs, film that shows what staffs want to see, and direct contact with the people who make decisions. For most players that work should begin in the freshman or sophomore year of high school.
If your player is already a junior or senior
You are not out of options. There is usually more available than families think, but the window is shorter and the plan has to be sharper. NAIA, Division III, junior college, transfer and international routes all exist. The worst thing to do is wait another season to see what happens.
